Year round support for meter board upgrades
What are meter boards and why might one need replacing?
- Outdated insulation and wiring will not meet the latest safety standards and could deteriorate over time resulting in exposed wires that increase the chance of electrical arcing and short circuits that could cause fires.
- An old meter board may be incapable of handling the electrical demand placed on it by modern technology and appliances. If you have a lot of electrical devices in your home, the meter board may become overloaded, overheat and cause a fire hazard.
- No circuit protection like RCDs (Residual Current Devices) or circuit breakers may be present on an old meter board. These devices are crucial for identifying faults and switching off the power immediately should an electrical malfunction occur, thus reducing the chance of an electrical fire occurring.

What are consumer units and why should I upgrade one?
Electrical consumer units are key components of your home’s electrical system, controlling and distributing your property’s power supply. An electrical consumer unit powers all of your home’s circuits, and is composed of several parts including a mains switch, RCDs (Residual Current Devices) and circuit breakers.
Often, people call consumer units fuse boxes, but they aren’t actually the same thing. In fact, a consumer unit is a newer and safer form of old-fashioned fuse boxes that typically no longer comply with the most up-to-date wiring regulations.
Although both fuse boxes and consumer units switch off the power should a power surge or overload occur, they do it in different ways. Fuse boxes contain wires that melt when power surges occur, resulting in the circuit tripping and the power switching off. As a result, it’s difficult to spot which circuit is faulty in order to replace the fuse that has melted and restore the power. Consumer units, on the other hand, use a circuit breaker to cut off the power, and this makes it simple to identify the fault and repair it.
Consumer units may need replacing if they are outdated or faulty and therefore cannot provide adequate protection from any power surges. Some older models have no RCD to break the current in the event of a power surge while some units may be made from plastic and need replacing with a safer metal one. A qualified electrician will be able to identify whether your home’s consumer unit is functioning correctly or whether it needs an upgrade. Our expert team of electrical contractors can inspect and carry out your consumer unit upgrade in Belfast.
